In 2012, Barry Weir an enthusiastic Aston Martin Collector and the first person to circumnavigate the world in an historic car, a DB2/4, commissioned Bertone to build Jet 2+2, as the original Jet 2, a concept car built for Lilli Bertone, was not for sale.
Jet 2+2 was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva motor show, to celebrate both Aston Martin's centenary and 60 years of collaborations between Aston Martin and Bertone.
Redesigned around the Aston Martin Rapide, the car was built as a 4 door “Shooting Brake”, which is in essence a cross between a sports car and an estate car (station wagon). The estate-like rear increases roof space for passengers significantly. In addition, and a first for Aston Martin, the rear seats fold flat at the press of a button, allowing the boot floor to extend automatically right up to the back of the front seats, creating a cavernous load space.
Sharing 70% of its DNA with the Rapide, sports car performance comes from the same 6.0 V12 engine delivering 470 bhp, mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
Other custom touches include redesigned slimmer front seats, to increase the sense of space for rear seat passengers, unique two toned upholstery in softer Italian leather than in the standard Rapide and custom wood and chrome interior finishings.
In addition, the car features a dimmable full length panoramic glass roof, which changes colour from clear to blue at the push of a button, which makes the car feel airy and much larger than the standard Rapide.
Drawings, renderings and photographic imagery were shown to the Board of Aston Martin, including chief designer Marek Reichman and chief executive Ulrich Bez, who were so pleased with the concept, they approved the idea of putting it into production. Indeed, when the car was built, Bertone were going to build 10 cars, with Aston Martin then putting the car into full production. Unfortunately, Bertone sadly went out of business in 2014, with Jet 2+2 significantly being the last car ever built by this iconic design and coach building house. It also means that the car is unique example of an Aston Martin Jet 2+2, an entirely new production car of one!
With its striking design and unparalleled engineering, Jet 2+2 is more than just a “one of one” design classic; it’s a piece of automotive history and represents an exceptional opportunity for both Aston Martin enthusiasts and collectors alike.
