VEHICLE OVERVIEW

The Morgan Plus 4 exemplifies quintessential English craftsmanship and features a straightforward design that includes a distinct chassis paired with lightweight bodywork. Its elegant presentation has been meticulously honed over the years while maintaining its original charm.

Introduced in 1950, the Series 1 Plus 4 was succeeded by the Series 2 in 1985. This superb example built in 1992, was the first Plus 4 to use the wider chassis of the Plus 8 and also the first to incorporate Rover's 2.0 litre T16 twin cam engine, mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

A comprehensive history folder accompanies the car which includes the original sales invoice from when the car was supplied new. This lists all of the options that were specified for the car and includes: leather reclining and folding seats with contrasting piped trimming and headrests; a vinyl hood with contrasting piped trimming; Plus 8 spotlights; reversing light; door handles; scuttle roll bar; luggage carrier; bonnet strap; badge bar; spare wheel cover; speaker and aerial fitment; clock; left hand door mirror and rust proofing treatment. In addition, the car has also been fitted with Rutherford adjustable AVO shock absorbers all round.

Showing just 25k miles from new, the car’s extensive  service and maintenance history file, provides plenty of evidence that it has been very well maintained. Most recently, it has had its head gasket replaced, new cambelts, engine oil system and cooling system flush and new oil and longlife anti-freeze.

The car comes with all of its wet weather equipment, including side-screens and tonneau cover and as part of the pre-sales preparation, it was treated to our comprehensive underside preservation treatment.

With Spring coming soon, this Plus 4, with a “no advisories” MOT until October 2025, represents an excellent opportunity for someone looking for an exceptional, low mileage, high specification example, that’s ready to drive and enjoy.

EXTERIOR

Royal Ivory is a very popular colour for all Morgans, especially the Series 2 and for good reason. The colour really accentuates the flowing lines and purposeful stance of the car, especially with the wider Plus 8 chassis, that adds extra 4 inches of width to the cabin. In addition, we think the choice of the green hood with subtle cream side piping and the silver painted wire wheels, make for a lovely contrast to the Royal Ivory paintwork.

As can be seen from the photos, the paintwork is in superb overall condition,

holds an impressive shine, is uniform both in colour and finish across all panels and all panel gaps are factory tight. As to be expected from a car of its age, there are some very minor blemishes.  All chrome work and bumpers are free from any corrosion and dents.

The vinyl soft top is in excellent overall condition and is free from any rips or tears, as is the plastic rear window, which is also not discoloured.

As part of the pre-sales preparation, the car was subject to a sympathetic paintwork detail and treated to two coats of Swissvax’s excellent Crystal Rock wax, which provides up to 6-12 months paint protection.

All glass, rubbers and plastics are also in excellent condition, as is the leather hood strap which is complemented by “Morgan” logoed leather protective bonnet end caps, front and rear.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

The Plus 4 cabin is nice place to be, the reclining, folding seats are in lovely condition showing very little wear. Trimmed in high quality green leather, they are nicely offset by the subtle green piping on the seats’ edges and are both comfortable and supportive.

The leather covered dash board incorporates a rev counter and speedometer, immediately in front of the driver with 4 smaller supporting gauges for fuel level, water temperature, oil pressure and voltmeter in the dashboard centre.  A small clock sits to the right of the driver. An aftermarket wood rimmed Moto-Lita 3 spoke steering wheel replaces the original 3 spoke leather rimmed Morgan one, but this has been retained and will come with the car.

Rocker switches for heating, lights, rear fog lights, front spotlights and hazard warning lights, are conveniently mounted in the central dash, immediately in front of the gear lever. Indicators, horn  and windscreen wipers  are operated by stalks either side of the steering wheel. With a well-placed gear lever and pedal box, it’s every bit the driver-focused interior you’d expect.

A handy cubby hole in the left hand side of the dashboard acts as a useful glove box, which also contains a wired in torch.

Although the car is fitted with speakers and an aerial, it does not currently contain a radio.

The original carpets are in good condition, protected on both driver’s and passenger’s side with Morgan OEM over mats.

All the switch gear, dials, lights, warning lights and heater, work as they should.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The Rover T-16 engine is a gem that responds well, whether being driven gently or being pushed.

Notably, the T-16 engine develops its peak torque at just 2,500 rpm, some 2000 rpm lower than the earlier pre-1992 M-16 engine, translating to a much more tractable real world driving experience, than the earlier engine, that needed to be revved higher to deliver the same performance.

With just 25K miles from new, backed up by comprehensive service and MOT history, the car has been very well maintained.

Most recently in February this year it has had its head gasket replaced, which necessitated an engine oil and coolant flush, head re-skimming, new head bolts and cam seals and for good measure the cam belt was also replaced.

The 5 speed gearbox has a short positive throw. The clutch engages smoothly and shows no undue signs of wear.

On the road it feels agile, quick to turn, with plenty of driver feedback.

The car rides well on its conventional springs and shock absorber suspension set-up, at the front and live rear axle with semi-elliptical constant rate leaf spring suspension at the rear.  In this car however, the standard shock absorbers have been replaced by Rutherford adjustable AVO shock absorbers all round. These provide for 16 different adjustment settings on an easily accessible adjuster at the bottom of each shock to allow the driver to “tune” the damping to best suit their driving style, handling, ride comfort and if running fully laden, with lots of luggage.

Finally, invoice history evidences suspension springs, kingpins and kingpin bushes were all replaced and suspension re-greased at 23K miles.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on factory 15” painted chrome wire wheels, with chrome hexagonal centre locks and fitted with Michelin Energy Saver 195/60 R15 tyres all round (including the spare) and all with significant tread left. The wheels are in very good condition with no signs of kerb damage or corrosion.

Fitted with front discs brakes and rear drums all round, invoice history evidences a strip down and service of front and rear brakes at 24.7K miles.  Braking performance is strong and progressive, with no sign of pulling either to the left or the right.

UNDERSIDE

The bulkhead, front chassis cross frame, box sections and rear cross member are all solid. The car was also specified with rust proofing when the car was ordered, which has gone some way into protecting much of the underside. However, as part of the pre-sales preparation, the car’s underside has additionally been treated to our comprehensive underside preservation treatment.

This entailed an underside steam clean, any surface corrosion on mechanical, componentry wire brushed and treated with rust converter. This was then followed by the application of 2 coatings of clear DINITROL automotive rust prevention and corrosion protection, to all areas and mechanical componentry underneath the car, floor pans and wheel arches.

This provides for a further level of corrosion resistance to those areas, which is long lasting and jet wash proof. This all adds up to a car that now has outstanding underbody protection from corrosion, even if driven on UK roads all year round.
