VEHICLE OVERVIEW

A gorgeous Saab 900 Turbo 16 Convertible. As a 1987 car, it comes with the Full Pressure Turbo Intercooled engine, developing 175 bhp and 201ft/lbs of torque. It also comes with the dealer optioned Airflow body kit and attractive 3 spoke “Aero” alloy wheels, making this car an extremely rare and highly sought after 80s icon and one of the very best examples around.

The car’s body work is in exceptional condition, as is the Buffalo Grey leather interior. The mohair hood is in excellent unmarked condition and lowers and raises perfectly. With just over 97,500 miles from new, this is considered low mileage by Saab 900 standards and as evidenced by the enormous documented history file, it has been maintained fastidiously, regardless of costs. Recent expenditure includes a new clutch, slave cylinder, water pump, new front and rear discs, refurbished rear callipers and new brakes pads all around. Paperwork includes the original service book showing a FSH, from a combination of main dealers and independent specialists (with no less than 28 stamps), all original manuals, extensive parts and service invoices and every MOT the car has been issued with to date.

EXTERIOR

Finished in Cherry Red, Saab did an excellent job of transforming the quirky hatchback into a convertible with both a purposeful stance and attractive outline.

The paintwork is in exceptional original condition, with only the leading edge of the bonnet showing the most minor of stone chipping.

Having been little used and dry stored by its last owner since 2015, there is no evidence of any corrosion on the car’s exterior, especially in the places, less well cared for Saab 900s, typically rust. In addition, all black plastics and rubber trim parts are unbleached by the sun and all lights are crystal clear and unblemished.

Finally, inner door and wings, wheel arches, suspension components, chassis and underside have been comprehensively treated to Lanoguard anti-rust treatment.

INTERIOR & EQUIPMENT

The cabin is in excellent overall condition and a testament to Saab’s legendary build quality. The Buffalo Grey leather seats are in fantastic condition, remaining supple and supportive, with just the heated front seats, showing the lightest patina, entirely in keeping with a well-cared for 34 year old car. The rear seats present as hardly used. All controls, including the cruise control are fully functioning. The black mohair hood is as new; undo a couple of clips, press a button and it lowers smoothly in 18 seconds. The car is fitted with a Pioneer CD player and RDS FM radio, with a built in USB port. However, the car does also come with the original period correct Pioneer radio cassette player. The carpeted boot floor is as new and as can be seen from the photos, the boot floor is entirely rust free. Finally, the spare wheel and tyre are unused and the original jack and tool kit are present.

ENGINE, TRANSMISSION & SUSPENSION

The engine bay presents very tidily and has been treated to Dinitrol Corroheat 4010. This treatment is specifically designed for engine compartments, providing corrosion prevention that is heat resistant up to temperatures of more than 200 deg C.

As part of its pre-sales preparation, the car was given a major service and fitted with a new clutch, slave cylinder, water pump, alternator belts and bushes, heater control valve and a replacement APC box (to solve an intermittent turbo boosting problem).

Invoice records show that the gearbox was subject to a comprehensive rebuild at 32K miles. The 5 speed gearbox changes smoothly with all synchromeshes appearing healthy, but typical of the Saab 900, is a little notchy.

The engine is as refined and tractable at low revs, as it is under load. The turbo (checked as part of the pre-sales preparation) spins freely and pulls well from as little as 2,500 before delivering it’s considerable punch from around 3000 rpm.

Finally, the suspension is knock-free and the steering precise.

WHEELS, BRAKES & TYRES

The car sits on original 15 inch Saab Aero alloy wheels, which have recently been professionally refurbished to an exceptional standard. New Yokohama Blue Earth GT tyres have been fitted in the correct 195/60 R15 size. The spare is an unused space saver.

The brakes are powerful and smooth, the previous owner having fitted new discs and pads all round and had both rear callipers refurbished.

UNDERSIDE

As can be seen from the photos, the underside presents very well and in addition to the factory under seal, it has been subject to a comprehensive Lanoguard rustproofing treatment, not just to the floor pans, but to all components at risk of corrosion. Lanoguard is jet-wash proof and resistant to heat, salt, acid and alkaline. This keeps any road salt at bay and provides for lasting protection going forwards.
