When you think of Alfa Romeos from the 60s and 70s, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the 105 Series Coupé. It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Bertone and is considered one of his best designs. Not only does it stand out as one of the most visually appealing and agile classic saloon cars of its time, but its advanced specifications, including a five-speed gearbox, all-round disc brakes, independent suspension, and potent twin-cam engine, continue to outshine many contemporary counterparts.
The 2000 GT Veloce, more commonly referred to as the 2000 GTV, represented the ultimate in the series, replacing the 1750 GTV in 1971 and continuing to the end of series production in 1977. The previous smaller engine was adapted to give it a larger bore and stroke achieving a near enough 2-litre (1962cc) capacity and producing 131bhp, up 10bhp from the 1750 GTV.
First registered in October 1972, this peppy 2000 GTV has covered 107,296 miles in its 52 year life. A comprehensive documented history file with invoices dating back to 1992 evidence regular servicing over the years, up to its most recent service as part of the pre-sales preparation, in September 2024.
It was subject to a comprehensive restoration costing over £20,000, from the period November 2020 to March 2021, which entailed a full bare metal strip down, corrosion repairs and full respray. In addition, invoice history evidences a cylinder head rebuild, gearbox rebuild including clutch replacement, suspension upgrades with a Harvey Bailey handling kit, all within the last 12,000 miles.
Most recent works include, replacement of carburettor mounts, fuel hoses, steering idler box and fuel hoses.
Finally, as part of the pre-sales preparation the car was subject to a full bodywork paint correction and detailing, engine bay and interior deep clean and detailing and an underside deep clean and preservation treatment, at a total cost of £4000.
The car now looks superb inside and out and is well protected underneath. In addition, it has benefitted from significant investment to date, to keep it a lovely driving car for very many years/miles to come.
It’s a car to be enjoyed and driven, so as to experience to the full, what an incredible drive these pretty little Italian coupes are and not just a “show pony,” destined to be kept under cover in a static collection.
Finished in Rosso Corsa (“Racing Red”), it is perhaps the most synonymous with Alfa Romeo and as such, perhaps the most desirable colour for the 2000 GTV. In addition, we think it really compliments the beautiful lines of this pretty little coupe.
The car went through a comprehensive bodywork restoration over the period November 2020 to March 2021, which included a complete glass out strip down to bare metal, all areas of corrosion cut-out and new metal repair panels either used or fabricated as required and welded in. The car was then subject to a full respray. A detailed history of the bodywork restoration works is set out across a number of invoices.
The car’s paintwork presents beautifully, with no signs of any bubbling, dents or lacquer peel to be seen. The colour is uniform across all panels and the paintwork is not faded and holds a deep shine. Panel gaps, are good and the doors fit remarkably flush.
The sills are also a real tell-tale sign of whether the car has been reasonably well restored or not. Outer sills are originally one-piece items that run behind the front and rear wings. If you can’t see seams where the wings overlap, in line with the front and rear door edges (as you can with this car), the repair is not as per factory specification, suggesting that the repair is a poor one.
Chrome work is very good all round with no signs of pitting to the larger items, such as bumpers, door mirrors and hubcaps. We do note however, that the “Mazak” metal grill is beginning to show some signs of patina. In addition, there is a 5 pence sized dent in the rear bumper just above the exhaust exit.
Front and rear windscreen rubbers as well as the driver and passenger door rubbers are all in good shape, having been replaced as part of the restoration works.
Light lenses are all clear. All lights work as they should. Glass work is generally good all round with no cracks or large chips, but there are some minor scratches visible to the front screen. The rear screen, still retains its original demisting element.
The cockpit of the 2000 GTV is typical of Alfa Romeos of the era and oozes a mixture of sporting Italian flair and purposeful ergonomics.
The heavily cowled main instrument binnacles, allow for easier reading, even in the strongest sunlight. Ancillary dials are both comprehensive and purposefully angled towards the driver. In addition, the gearstick, presenting high and sprouting straight out below the dash, falls to hand perfectly for quick gear changes. Touches of chrome here and there, dainty stalks and switch gear, as well as the beautiful and tactile original wood rimmed deep dished steering wheel, provide for the finishing touches of elegance, that is pure Italian showmanship.
The original seats in black vinyl are in good condition front and back with no rips or tears. The front seats tilting forwards perfectly to allow access to the rear. The headlining is in great condition, with no signs of any staining from water ingress.
New carpets were fitted in 2018 and are still in excellent condition, door cards also are in very good condition. In addition, the car has been fitted with modern inertia reel seatbelts. All instruments and switchgear, operate as they should, including the two speed heater fan.
The car is fitted with a later DAB radio/cd player with a detachable face and remote control, which play through speakers mounted in the rear parcel shelf.
Powered by Alfa Romeo’s wonderful 2.0 litre variant of its twin cam 4 cylinder Nord engine, this car is fitted with twin 40 DCOE Webber carburettors. Making just over 130 bhp and around the same in torque, it’s an engine that engine provides both low down drive with an eagerness to rev. With just over 1000 kgs of kerb weight to push, the car provides for lively performance, aided by a 5 speed gearbox with well-spaced ratios, able to exploit the engines power throughout its rev range. Enjoying the engine and gearbox, is only further enhanced and by the fabulous induction sound and raspy exhaust note, these cars a well-known for.
Invoice records evidence the car’s been well maintained over the years with invoices covering services from 1992, all the way up to its most recent service in September 2024.
The car had a top end rebuild at 94K miles, a gearbox rebuild and new clutch at 95K miles, as well as a carburettor rebuild.
The gear lever falls perfectly to hand and whilst the throw is a bit long by today’s standard it is still a joy to use, with gears engaging as they should and with no signs of weak synchromesh in any of the gears (a not uncommon issue with Alfa’s of this period).
Electronic ignition has been fitted to make for easier starting and better running and new carburettor mounts, fuel hoses and gaskets, fitted as part of the most recent service, provide for peace of mind on a 52 year old car.
A Harvey Bailey handling kit has been fitted to the car and new Bilstein yellow front shock absorbers have also been fitted recently. Handling, is tight and predictable, with the standard LSD fitted to the 2000 GTV, helping to keep the rear end in check and which is also devoid of any undue noises.
There are no undue squeaks or rattles from the suspension and no excess play at the steering wheel, the steering idler box having been replaced in the most recent September 2024 service.
Finally, exhaust system is still in good shape with no sounds of any blowing or smells of exhaust fumes entering the cabin
The car sits on its original 14 inch steel wheels with chrome centre hub caps. The wheels are in excellent condition having been refurbished as part of the restoration in 2021. All driven wheels are fitted with matching 185/70/14 88H Kleber Dynaxer HP3 tyres, fitted in 2018 and all with significant tread left. The car comes with its original full size spare wheel, also in refurbished condition and fitted with a Yokohama S306 of the same size as the driven wheels.
The braking system consists of discs all round, with twin brake servos and dual circuit master cylinder. The braking system works as it should, pulling the car up smartly with no tracking left or right.
Although re-undersealed as part of the restoration in 2020/21, as part of the pre-sales preparation, the car’s underside was subject to a deep clean, surface corrosion on any mechanical componentry removed and then coated with Dinitrol anti corrosion clear wax. In addition, the underside of the car was treated to a new coating of stone chip resistant underseal with built in corrosion inhibitors. Finally, “Lanoguard Motospray” treatment has been applied to the hard to access areas, such as behind the bumpers, prop shaft tunnel, up behind the spare wheel well, behind the petrol tank, inner sills, inner wings and wheel arches.
This all adds up to a car that now is well protected from future issues with corrosion, typically unavoidable for cars driven on UK roads all year round and which extends the life of the restoration carried out in 2020/2021.
The documented history also contains the current V5C, which identifies the car as a UK registered Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce, first registered on 04/10/1972. It also records the car as an Historic Vehicle and as such, is MOT, Tax and ULEZ exempt.
MOT certificates date back to 1988 right up to the most recent “advisory free” MOT which expired in August 2024.
We’ve carried out a Total Car Check report dated 04/11/2024, which was clear.
In addition, there is a comprehensive collection of invoices for maintenance, service and parts expenditure, dating back to 1992 right up until October 2024.
These invoices include the restoration works carried out in 2020/21, as well as significant mechanical works such as the top end rebuild, gearbox rebuild and clutch replacement, fitment of the Harvey Bailey Handling kit, as well as a plethora of service related invoices.
Finally, the car comes with 2 sets of keys, a period 2000 GT Veloce Instruction book and 2000 GT Veloce/Spider Veloce dealer’s brochure.
